Film Forum: GATTACA
4:30pm 7th February, 2009
Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne
Vincent is one of the last "natural" babies born into a sterile, genetically-enhanced world, where life expectancy and disease likelihood are ascertained at birth. Myopic and due to die at 30, he has no chance of a career in a society that now discriminates against your genes, instead of your gender, race or religion.
GATTACA presents a frightening vision of a future where human destinies are determined by DNA. But is this Science Fiction or a future reality?
Professor Jenny Graves, of the Australian National University, discusses the potential for the GATTACA scenario to become a reality based on our current knowledge of DNA.
Jenny heads the Comparative Genomics Research group in the Research School of Biological Sciences at the Australian National University. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and 2006 L’Oreal-UNESCO Laureate. She has received many honours and awards, most recently the Macfarlane Burnet Medal in 2006 and the Australian Thinker-of-the-Year Award in 2007.
