Global climate change is challenging our society. Rising temperatures threaten our economy,
our way of life and our national environmental treasures such as the tropical rain forests and the
Great Barrier Reef. Can our native flora and fauna adapt? Can we adapt? Science sits at the
heart of our understanding of climate change, its impacts and our capacity to respond.
Created with support from the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development,
this workshop offers an absolutely unique opportunity to explore curriculum materials and
resources that support creative learning in this space.
Curriculum Presentations
Hear and meet leading scientists discussing climate change and the capacity of life on earth to adapt to it.
Including:
Professor David de Kretser, AC, Governor of Victoria.
Curriculum Resources
Workshop presentation of new middle years curriculum materials being prepared by the Australian
Science Teachers Association. These materials use the history of Darwin’s visit to Australia
to explore our biodiversity. In keeping with the curriculum materials this will be a hands on session.
Workshop presented by the Australian Academy of science on the use of the Primary Connections
materials in teaching about biodiversity and the environment. Primary Connections promotes
linking the teaching of science with that of literacy to enrich the learning experience for
students.
Workshop presentation of new curriculum materials (VELS 3, 4 & 5) offered by the Bug Blitz organization. These materials use insects to explore biodiversity, the environment and conservation.
Workshop presentation by the Monash Science Centre on a range of activities that can be used
by schools in teaching climate change and habitats.
Workshop presenting ideas for teaching the concepts of Evolution, including using the New Scientist Evolution booklet (provided). Presented by Soula Bennett, winner of the 2009 BHP Billiton Science Teacher of the Year Award.
