Darwin[ism] in 2009 - a philisophical discourse9 July, 2009Alliance Francais, SydneyThis symposium reflects in part on the emergence of philosophy of biology as a discipline over the past 40-odd years, and the extent to which it has concentrated on Darwin and evolutionary biology as its conceptual 'map' and 'toolkit' at the same time. Issues of concern in recent years include the need to reevaluate widespread belief about genetic theory (cf. the Human Genome Project), challenges from developmental biology, and other ideas from biology which may or may not challenge orthodox Darwinism, such as self-organization. Jean Gayon, the world authority on the 'modern synthesis' (i.e. the synthesis, in the early 20th century, of genetics and Darwinian theory). Contact: Charles Wolfe Email: c.wolfe@usyd.edu.au |
