Night Talk:

De-bunking Darwin?

6:30pm 26th March, 2009

Australian National Museum, Sydney

Speaker: Jim Endersby, University of Sussex, UK

One hundred and fifty years after it was first published, Charles Darwin’’s On the origin of species continues to sell, to be discussed, attacked and defended. The Origin is one of those books whose controversial reputation ensures that most people have an opinion about it, even if they have never read it. Jim Endersby will debunk some of the myths that surround Darwin’s book by looking at exactly what Darwin did and didn’t say, and at the way his contemporaries reacted to the book. Jim Endersby is a leading expert on the history of science,  the author of A guinea pig’s history of biology (2007) and Imperial nature (2008). He has just edited a new edition of the Origin (to be published in 2009). He teaches the history of science at the University of Sussex, UK.  Cost: Australian Museum Members $20, non-Members $30 Bookings: Bookings and pre-payments are essential. Phone 02 9320 6225 or book online at www.australianmuseum.net.au/members Inclusions: Light refreshments and a one-hour talk, followed by open question time
