Exhibition: Generate

2 December 2008 - 26 March 2009

Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra

An exhibition by Julie Ryder, a Canberra-based scientist-turned-artist who has a fascination with nature and combines collage and sculpture with botanical taxonomy and microscopy.

The exhibition is a body of highly decorative, mixed-media pieces that combine textiles, plant material and glass to explore not only Darwin's scientific theories, but also his thoughts, emotions and personal relationships.

Thousands of minute pieces of leaves, meticulously arranged onto beaten bark or tapa cloth, form ‘portraits' of Darwin, his wife Emma and their mutual grandfather Josiah Wedgwood, in traditional early nineteenth century European textile designs. "The millions of hand-cut leaves reference how Darwin approached collecting living specimens; with obsession and without limits," explains Julie. "He was fanatical about re-ordering and classifying everything he encountered."
