Launch: The HMS Beagle ship bell chimeJuly 2009Civic Park, Darwin
Darwin City Council will launch a new artwork, The HMS Beagle Ship Bell Chime by Dr Anton Hasell of Mia Mia, Victoria. The HMS Beagle Ship Bell Chime features eleven bells of various sizes tuned in a pentatonic scale across a range of two octaves. It includes bells from both the Asian and European bell traditions, which recognises the importance of both Darwin City and Charles Darwin’s geographical link with Asia and historical link with Europe. The artwork also includes a replica HMS Beagle ship’s bell cast in brass instead of bronze. This recognises the City of Darwin’s link with Charles Darwin through the HMS Beagle, the ship in which Charles Darwin circumnavigated the world on its second voyage, and from which the Port of Darwin was sighted on its third voyage.
