Journey to the Surface of the Earth
Exhibition runs 22 May - 16 June
Domain House, Birdwood Drive, Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne
Journey to the Surface of the Earth exhibition forms the outcome of an interdisciplinary seminar at the Centre for Ideas (Southbank) taught by Elizabeth Presa and Elliot Howard. The seminar brings together, for the first time, students in the ‘World in the Artist’ subject (Southbank) and students in the University wide Breadth subject ‘The Poetics of the Body’.
Working together and with established artists, students explore the earth’s physical aspects taking into account such things as its biodiversity, weather patterns and geological features, as well as mythological, cultural and political histories. Explorations encompass the microscopic to macro viewpoints as we move from the surface of the skin, to the latitudes of suburban backyards and beyond. As explorers we negotiate, map and illuminate what is around us, seeking out what lies unnoticed or hidden form view to discover new vistas, terrains and ways of experiencing them. Charles Darwin’s writings form a model for observing the reality of matter, space and time.
