Musical performance: Transmutations, Age of Wonders22 September 2009Darwin Convention Centre, DarwinThe Darwin Symphony Orchestra is commissioning a piece of music which will form the fourth part of a group of works called the Age of Wonders, by UK composer Michael Stimpson, to be performed in England in 2009. The three other sections are: The Man Who Walked With Henslow (violin and piano), String Quartet No. 2 (The Beagle), and Transmutations (for string orchestra). The musical element of the HMS Beagle Ship Bell Chime artwork announced by Darwin City Council will be woven into this specially commissioned piece of music. This piece will be premiered at the opening of the Charles Darwin Symposium 2009, tying together the City of Darwin, the Charles Darwin University and the Northern Territory Government with the UK 200 celebrations.
