In his book, On the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin used the breeding of domestic animals, such as dogs, pigeons, and horses, to introduce his theory of evolution. He argued that since humans can select upon genetic variation to establish distinctive breed characteristics within decades, it must be considered plausible for nature to select upon, and fix, specific characters over thousands of years. In a lively discourse Professor Bill Ballard will lead us in Darwin’s footsteps offering a unique Australian perspective, discussing how humans have selected specific characters to develop the emblematic Australian Cattle Dog or Blue Heeler. Bill’s trusted companion, Taz, will give his unique perspective throughout the talk.
